Kendo and its effects in the activities of the Japanese police

Just a few minutes talk about Kendo to help you understand better what Kendo really is. Kendo practice does not mean only learning the necesary techniques to fight using a sword, it means also getting the mindset adequate for that. This attitude is useful in many aspects of life, including in the activities of the Japanese police.

Mitsuru Hamasaki is a former police officer who has practiced kendo for about 6 decades. Dating back roughly 2,000 years ago, the sword fighting that became kendo is taught to members of the Japanese police force as a means of building character and empathy. To Mitsuru Hamasaki, the former police officer who is himself a kendo trainer, accessing this mindset is even more important than mastering technique, and we can all find out why from the video.
